When I was around nine years old, I came across a trick that defeats nausea and vomiting. Over the years I have taught this trick to friends, family, and even through a viral video I posted on TikTok (which has gotten me many thank yous from people with emetophobia)
The trick is so simple, it sounds silly. I’ve had multiple people not even try it because they think it’s so dumb. It’s crazy, but it works.
First I’ll tell you how, then why.
Step 1: Put your left hand, palm up, in front of you.
Step 2: Put your right middle and pointer fingers together.
Step 3: Take those two fingers to your left pulse (staring at the base of your palm) and while applying pressure, drag down 3 times, then up 3 times.
Step 4: Do it to the other wrist.
Step 5: Repeat until you feel better.
— You must apply pressure for this technique to work. Lightly gliding your fingers across your pulse will not change your nauseousness. —
This method is called acupressure. Acupressure is a Chinese method meant to soothe by applying pressure to certain points in your body. By doing the method shared above, you are applying pressure on a pressure point called the Neiguan (nay-gwann) which helps in preventing nausea and vomiting. Focusing on your breath while applying this acupressure technique also has helped prevent vomiting in my own experience.
This trick works best for nausea caused from menstrual cycles, anxiety, motion sickness, or just random nausea. However, as I have experienced in the past, if you have food poisoning or a stomach bug, it is best to allow your body to rid itself of its toxins rather than preventing it by using acupressure. Before my first and quite unfortunate experience with food poisoning, I had not vomited in ten years because of the acupressure technique I learned when I was nine.
This trick has been a life saver while having nausea in social situations, before my basketball games in high school (nausea caused by anxiety), before and after sudden drops on roller coasters, from painful cramps, and during sudden waves of nausea for no particular reason.
If you struggle from nausea commonly or every now and then, try this acupressure trick. Your nausea should fade and vomiting will be avoided. If you want a visual representation of this information, check out the video below!
